David Week 4
1Samuel 22: 1-8
Welcome to Nambucca Baptist Church for our service this Sunday 31st January. Today we continued our series on the life of David. Last week we left David behaving like an insane man to try to gain some sanctuary in Gath, the home of Goliath. Clearly, he was in a bad place, but somehow if we read psalm 34 we can see that he experienced a transformative renewal in his relationship with God and when he was evicted from Gath he knew where to go. The cave of Adullam was the perfect sanctuary for David where he was quickly joined by his family and some 400 men who were on the run from Saul. I don’t think that these men were bad or lazy men, rather men who had been marked for punishment by Saul because of their personal loyalty to David. Clearly lazy, no good layabouts do not suddenly transform into David’s elite mighty men of valor. These men must have been mighty warriors who fought with David in his battles with the Philistines and were being persecuted because of their loyalty to David rather than Saul.
David was chosen to be the captain of this group of warriors and as a type of our Lord Jesus, he proved to be the one to turn all their lives around completely. The obvious conclusion is that we need to trust in the Lord Jesus who has promised to be with us no matter what difficulties we face in life. As the scripture reminds us: – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)
This is where we would normally take up a collection but as you can see we can’t pass an offering bag around online. We have, however, provided a secure online giving facility for you. You can either use the Tithe.ly app on your smartphone or just click on the green button on the screen. We have been blessed by the way so many of you have managed to continue to give in various ways so that we can continue with the work of the Lord here in our church and beyond our walls.
Thanks for staying with us to the end of the service. If you have made it this far you deserve a reward. Here is a video from Appian Media about a visit to the recently discovered cave of Adullam.
