Galatians Week 1

Galatians 1:1-10 NKJV

Welcome to Nambucca Baptist Church for our worship and Communion service for Sunday 6th February 2022. It was a lovely sunny morning with a bit of a cool breeze which for me was a bit of a relief from the heat that we have experienced this Summer. We had a good number of people present and it was great to hear the singing, even if it was muffled a bit by the masks we were wearing. Wherever and whenever you find this service, you are welcome to be a part of our church family. Since we will be celebrating Holy Communion this morning you are welcome to prepare the elements at home and join with us around the Lord’s table.

The Message for Today

Today we start a new sermon series on Paul’s letter to the churches in Galatia. The title for today is ‘Only One Gospel’. I will spend a bit of time explaining the background to the letter before we get into the content.

The issue was that false teachers had followed behing Paul in his journey through the towns and villages of Galatia and were teaching that belief in Jesus’ death on the cross and  resurrection was not enough for your salvation. They were teaching another gospel. You had to do all these other things to be truly accepted by God. It was in effect bringing the gentile Christians, who had been saved by grace, back under the impossible burden of the Jewish law. If they tried to do this they would lose their salvation. This is a life and death fight for the souls of the new believers.

This is where we would normally take up a collection but as you can see we can’t pass an offering bag around online. We have, however, provided a secure online giving facility for you. You can either use the Tithe.ly app on your smartphone or just click on the green button on the screen. We have been blessed by the way so many of you have managed to continue to give in various ways so that we can continue with the work of the Lord here in our church and beyond our walls.

Taurus Mountains separating Tarsus from Cappadocia and Galatia
The Cilician Gates, this is the only pass that Paul could travel through to get from Tarsus to Galatia and Cappadocia. In ancint times whole armies had to travel through this narrow pass and there were no sealed roads back then.
